For more information about specific patches and what fixes they include, see the Related Technical Notes section at the end of this note. To apply the Reflection patch to an administrative installation You must first apply the patch to the administrative installation point. You can then upgrade to or install Reflection on your user workstations (depending on whether or not Reflection was previously installed on the workstations). Note the following: * Administrative rights are required to download and install the Reflection patch. * You must have access to the Reflection administrative installation point in order to apply the Reflection patch. Furthermore, the patch(es) must be applied to the appropriate version of Reflection. For more information about what Reflection product version is required for your patch, see the patch Readme or refer to the related technical notes listed at the end of this note. * Do not patch the administrative installation while users are running Reflection "from the network." * To apply a patch to an administrative installation of Reflection 9.0 or 9.0.1, you must have Microsoft's Windows Installer engine (MSI) version 2.0 installed. (You will receive Error 2251 and the patch installation will roll back if you attempt to apply a patch to Reflection 9.0 or 9.0.1 using an earlier version of MSI.) To check your MSI version on the Reflection administration installation machine, go to the Start Menu and click Run. Type msiexec in the Open field. To obtain MSI 2.0, go to the microsoft.com Download Center. For Windows NT 4.0 SP 6 and Windows 2000: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32832 For Windows 95, 98 and ME http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32831 To patch the administrative installation, follow the steps below. 1. Download the patch file. 2. Close all running applications so that system files can be updated if needed. 3. Using Windows Explorer, locate the downloaded Reflection patch file and double-click the file. After the file "unpacks" itself in your \Temp folder, the Reflection Patching Utility dialog box appears. 4. In the Apply patch to section, select "An Administrative installation on a server". Browse to the administrative installation location and select the Reflection MSI Installer Package. (The name of the .MSI file varies depending on the product name and version, for example, mp900ilc.msi or sx900ilc.msi.) 5. When the patching process is complete, an informational message appears indicating the status of the patching process. This message will display, "The patch was applied" if the installation was successful. (If problems occur, locate the patch log file, Wrqpatch.log, created in each user's temporary folder.) To upgrade workstations from an administrative installation point After the patch has been applied to the administrative installation, workstations can be upgraded to the newer version of Reflection. To upgrade Reflection workstations from patched administrative installation, you must run the following command line parameter at each workstation: msiexec /fvomus \ The parameter must conform either to a UNC path or a mapped drive character shared by all workstations. represents the specific MSI package for your product. The example below uses a UNC path and the Reflection Installer Package for Reflection Suite for X version 9.0: msiexec /fvomus \\MyServer\MyPath\sx900ilc.msi Note to administrators applying the Reflection Windows-based Products version 9.0.3 patch: After the Administrative installation has been upgraded, any user who selected features to use the installer's "install when required" option must update their workstation before using any of those features that have not already been installed on the workstation. If the workstation has not been updated, the user will receive an error message saying, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable," the first time they try to use any uninstalled feature. To install Reflection from an administrative installation point If the workstation has not had Reflection previously installed, you can install Reflection as you would a new installation by running Setup.exe from the administrative installation point or creating a shortcut. For more information about creating a shortcut to deploy Reflection, see the "How to deploy an installation using a Windows shortcut" section of the Reflection Installation and Quick Start Guide, or the Deploying Reflection 9.0 Online Guide (http://support.wrq.com/tutorials/deploy/Welcome.html).
